Between the Name and the Fire

Nazan Bekiroğlu

The very thing that fed the fire was the only thing that could extinguish it: The Wind...

The Sultan existed through his name; when his name was lost, so was his existence. The Janissaries existed through their loyalty, living by fire and tested by fire.

This is the story of Numan, whose life changes entirely after purchasing a janissary payroll certificate (esame), leading him into a love that consumes like a flame. Alongside him is Nihade, a woman who understands the soul of scents.

Set against the backdrop of Ottoman history, Between the Name and the Fire contrasts the rigid verdicts of official records with the fragile truths of individual lives. As a massive fire—sparked from both the Janissary hearth and Numan's heart—threatens to consume everything, the novel explores the delicate balance between the permanence of a Name and the destruction of Fire.
