The Comrades

Cengiz Dağcı

Set against the brutal backdrop of the Second World War, The Comrades follows a Russian military unit struggling to reach its designated position. However, among its ranks are soldiers named Hasan, Cumay, and Kasım—conscripts of Turkic descent who have been forced to join the very Russian army that occupies their homeland in order to fight the advancing German forces. Drawing heavily from his own harrowing military experiences, Cengiz Dağcı masterfully depicts the grim reality of these soldiers as they are relentlessly deployed from one perilous front to another.

Throughout their arduous journey, these men must wage a desperate, two-front war for survival. They battle not only the unforgiving forces of nature but also the deadly threat of German troops and fighter planes. Yet, the true tragedy of their long, exhausting march is the heartbreaking realization that they have no real destination. Their only true refuge lies in the cherished, fading memories of a homeland they may never see again.
