The Ninth External Ward

Peyami Safa

Considered one of Peyami Safa's masterpieces, The Ninth External Ward holds a significant place in Turkish literature as the first novel to truly wander through the depths and labyrinths of the human soul. It offers a profound psychological examination of a patient suffering from a debilitating illness. As the renowned critic Tanpınar noted, it is "the singular book of pain and suffering," powerful enough to stand as proof of the existence of the Turkish novel even if no other works remained.

The story follows a young protagonist seeking relief from a bone disease in his leg. After consulting numerous doctors, he is advised to rest in a stress-free environment. However, his stay at a Pasha's mansion in Erenköy, combined with his visits to the hospital, plunges his consciousness into an atmosphere of tragedy. Heavily inspired by Peyami Safa’s own childhood and youth, the novel masterfully confines hope and despair, joy and catastrophe within the same pages, offering a unique definition of the human condition.
