Mãri Hi: The Dream Tree

Hanna Limulja

Overnight, a strange and unknown creature takes over the city where a young girl named Luna lives. Its presence makes people sick, robbing them of their senses—the world loses its color and taste, and physical touch becomes impossible. As the elders slowly transform into stars in the sky, the only way to experience the world as it was before is through dreaming. But the sky soon becomes so full of stars that it is no longer possible to sleep, nor to dream. That is when Luna hears about a wise Yanomami man named Davi, who lives deep in the forest and holds the solution to it all: Mãri hi, the tree of dreams.

In this beautifully crafted children's book, anthropologist Hanna Limulja translates the profound importance of dreams in Yanomami culture for younger audiences, drawing on over fifteen years of experience living and working with the community. Rooted in Yanomami mythology and cosmology, the story honors the real-life leader and shaman Davi Kopenawa Yanomami, who has spent decades defending his people's rights. Featuring stunning illustrations by Wapichana artist and writer Gustavo Caboco, this book serves as a vital bridge, inviting city children to discover the Yanomami way of life and, in turn, learn to dream of the forest themselves.
