İlber Ortaylı
İlber Ortaylı (1947–2026) was a preeminent Turkish historian and polyglot whose mastery of languages, including Russian, German, and Latin, underpinned a brilliant academic career. After studying under the legendary Halil İnalcık, he held professorships at prestigious institutions such as Princeton and Oxford and served as the Director of the Topkapı Palace Museum from 2005 to 2012. His scholarly work profoundly shaped the modern understanding of Ottoman and Turkish history, cementing his status as one of the most respected intellectuals in the field.
