Alev Alatlı

Alev Alatlı (1944–2024) was a prominent Turkish intellectual, economist, and writer whose work bridged the gap between Eastern and Western thought. Born in Menemen to a military attaché father, her education spanned the globe. She began high school in Tokyo, Japan, and graduated from Middle East Technical University in Ankara with a degree in Economics and Statistics. As a Fulbright scholar, she earned a master’s degree in Development Economics at Vanderbilt University and pursued doctoral studies in Philosophy and Theology at Dartmouth College. During this time, she also taught at Caan College in Maine.

Returning to Turkey in 1974, Alatlı worked as a senior economist at the State Planning Organization and Istanbul University. She later conducted psycho-linguistics research at the University of California, Berkeley. Turning her focus to literature in the mid-1980s, she became a powerful voice in Turkish letters, questioning cultural identity and the trajectory of civilizations. Her extensive bibliography includes award-winning novels and essays. Alatlı served on the Presidential Council for Culture and Arts Policy until her passing in 2024, leaving behind a legacy of profound intellectual inquiry.
