Halil İnalcık

Halil İnalcık (1916–2016) was a world-renowned Turkish historian, widely regarded as the ultimate authority on Ottoman history. Born in Istanbul, he was among the first students at Ankara University's Faculty of Languages, History, and Geography, where he later taught from 1942 to 1972. His profound expertise led him to the University of Chicago, where he taught Ottoman history until 1993, while also lecturing at other prestigious institutions like Harvard.

Often called the "Pole Star of Historians," İnalcık’s seminal 1973 work, The Ottoman Empire: The Classical Age (1300–1600), set a new standard in historical scholarship. He held honorary memberships in international academies across Turkey, the US, and Europe. In 2008, Bilkent University founded the Halil İnalcık Center for Ottoman Studies to preserve his extensive personal archive, cementing his monumental legacy after his passing at the age of 100.
